I’m Carl, and I document paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, and wearable art on location at artists’ studios throughout the Hudson Valley. I’ve photographed artwork professionally for over thirty years, and I bring full studio lighting, professional camera equipment, and on-site proofing to your space, you never have to crate, insure, or transport a finished piece.

I’m based in Greene County and work across the region: from Albany south to Rockland County, and from Hunter east to the Connecticut border. That includes Hudson, Catskill, Kingston, Woodstock, Saugerties, Rhinebeck, Beacon, and New Paltz, along with Columbia, Greene, Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, and Rockland counties. Travel beyond the region can be arranged.

Every file reproduces the true color, texture, and surface detail of the original. The work is color-managed against a calibrated reference target, so a red in your studio is the same red on a juror’s monitor. That accuracy is what makes the difference for:

Great art deserves to be seen accurately. If you have work that needs documenting, get in touch and I’ll walk you through what it takes.

I’ve been photographing professionally for over thirty years, and since 2011 I’ve focused on artists, galleries, and creative professionals throughout the Hudson Valley.

Most of my work happens on location. I arrive at your studio with studio flashes, stands, modifiers, and camera equipment, and set up around the work rather than asking the work to come to me. You review images with me on-site on an iPad before I leave, so nothing is a surprise when the files arrive.

That on-location approach matters most for the pieces that are hardest to move or hardest to light: large canvases, wet or unvarnished surfaces, dimensional and textured work, sculpture that reads differently from every angle, and wearable art that needs a mannequin or a live model to make sense. Decades of lighting experience is largely decades of solving those specific problems.

Every project ends the same way regardless of the subject: color-managed files that hold up under a juror’s eye, on a gallery’s monitor, and in print. My job is to make an accurate record of what an artist made, and to make it well enough that the record does the work justice.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

HUDSON VALLEYart photographyOn-location artwork documentation by Carl CoXFine Art Photography and Artwork Documentation in the Hudson Valley I’m Carl, and I document paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, and wearable art on location at artists’ studios throughout the Hudson Valley. I’m an artist; Carl has been photographing my paintings for over 5 years. I am so pleased with how clean and authentic my reproductions look. It’s a collaborative process with Carl; he shows me the image on a tablet while he’s shooting, and gives me the opportunity to evaluate the image as he adjusts accordingly and reshoots. My paintings have uneven edges so there is also considerable work on the computer beyond shooting the image, and again- we are collaborative partners until I am satisfied with the image. My peers are always telling me how good my paintings look in print, and on the screen. Carl has real expertise, is really facile in his medium and is also an artist in photography, not just a documentor. His work is exceptional. I recommend him without reservation.
